WOLMAN CONSTRUCTION ANNOUNCED AS AWARD WINNER BY
HOME BUILDERS ASSOCIATION OF CONNECTICUT, INC.
Best New Commercial
Waterford, CT (November 12, 2003) --- Wolman Construction, a locally-based
general contractor and construction manager, will be honored at the
Home Builders Association of Connecticut Annual Awards (HOBI Awards)
Dinner to be held this evening at the Aqua Turf Country Club in Southington,
Connecticut. Industry peers located throughout the State of Connecticut
selected award recipients.
Wolman Construction won in the category of Best New Commercial
for the 20,000-square foot addition to the LymeAcademy College of
Fine Arts in Old Lyme, CT. Wolman Construction built the structure
known as phase 4, which was designed to house the administrative
and classroom facilities for a small, but growing College of Fine
Arts. Although the facility is a single, constructed element, the
design intends to separate the building into four distinct, but contiguous
areas. The front of the structure faces Lyme Street and is dedicated
exclusively to the administrative function. The 3,600 square foot
area houses the Presidents office, a reception and welcome area,
business and financial activities, and faculty offices. Immediately
to the west, separated by a firewall, is a corridor and gallery (with
vaulted ceiling) of approximately 1,600 square feet devoted to student,
faculty and traveling shows. The gallery is open to the public daily.
West of the gallery, is the largest area of the project, about 7,500
square feet of classroom space. This part of the building houses a
studio for incoming students, a lecture hall, wood shop, casting room,
and a senior studio with movable partition walls that give flexibility
for use. This section also contains a fully functional kitchen and
café area of 1,200 square feet, a student/faculty meeting area
and a water storage and distribution facility for current and future
use.
The building sits in a low profile on the lot as it attempts to represent
the scale and layout of the historic Town of Old Lyme. The internal
elements described above are divided externally by changes in siding,
trim and paint colors as the structure travels from the
street to the banks of the Lieutenant River.
This feature gives it a comfortable and inviting presence in support
of the academic function for which the building is principally designed.
Herbert S. Newman and Partners served as architects for this project.
"This building (the Academic Center) is one devoted to aesthetics,
and the people at Wolman Construction understood that. Their collaboration
with Herb Newman has given us a building that blends masterfully into
our campus and into the larger Old Lyme neighborhood in which it is
located. They understood, too, that while the building must be reflective
of the past, it must also support contemporary educational activities,
and it does that superbly. Throughout the construction process, Mark
Wolman and his people maintained an incredible sensitivity to our
mission - so much so that even on the very day of the dedication,
one of the workman putting the final touches on the art gallery overruled
us on a lighting decision we had made. He observed, quite correctly,
that the light we had chosen was too bright for the gallery! All in
all, Wolman has been a wonderful partner to the College," said
Frederick S. Osborne, President of LymeAcademy.
Established in 1988, Wolman Construction, under the direction of President
Mark Wolman, has excelled in both commercial and custom residential
construction based on a commitment to open, no surprises
client communication, accessibility to company management and outstanding
cost control. Current commercial projects for the Waterford-based
firm include the Alumni Center at the US Coast Guard Academy in New
London; and a banquet addition to the Saint Clements Castle, in Portland,
CT. Wolman Construction is a member of the Home Builders Association
of Connecticut.
The LymeAcademy College of Fine Arts was founded in 1976 by sculptor
Elisabeth Gordon Chandler who remains, to this day, a member of both
the faculty and of the Board of Trustees. It is New England's only
independent college of fine arts and one of only three such accredited
schools dedicated to representational art in the western tradition
in this country. The College graduated its first Bachelor of Fine
Arts class in 1996 and hopes to offer a Master of Fine Arts program
in the not too distant future LymeAcademy's traditional approach is
based on the proposition that in order to be a serious fine artist
one must first study the fundamentals of drawing, painting and sculpture
which produced the master artists from Michelangelo to Picasso. This
approach, which at first blush seems severe and limiting, is anything
but that. It provides the artistic foundation not as an answer but
as a building block from which each artist can create his or her own
vision and structure.
